Today, I thought I would write an article regarding a certain charity in America that comes to Autism Awareness…one I am unfamiliar with up to this point but will look into it today and see what the fuss is all about…is it all legit or are people blowing fumes for no real reason, I don’t know but i’m about to find out just what is going on across the pond!
Autism Speaks, I swear that only until recently, I had never heard of them…I began to think it was an American charity or something…and I live in Britain so it’s not that surprising that I might not have come across them as of yet, I had no idea who they were or what they stood for but apparently, from what I’ve read in many Autism groups online that they are horrible and such and I haven’t really looked into the group as of yet so I thought today…I’ll have a look and see what all the fuss is actually about because I see lots of people online who hate this group with a passion, for example I have seen Autism groups on Facebook that specifically say
”We Do Not Support Autism Speaks”
I literally have no idea what this charity is about…never heard about them but from what I’ve read about other people talking about it, I’m kind of glad I haven’t…up till now.
This is Autism’s Speaks sort of mission statement, take a look
At Autism Speaks, our goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders.
We are dedicated to funding global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a possible cure for autism. We strive to raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society: and we work to bring hope to all who deal with the hardships of this disorder. We are committed to raising the funds necessary to support these goals.
Autism Speaks aims to bring the autism community together as one strong voice to urge the government and private sector to listen to our concerns and take action to address this urgent global health crisis. It is our firm belief that, working together, we will find the missing pieces of the puzzle.
Ok…so you want to find a cure for Autism, I’ll just say here and now that if ever a cure was found, I would refuse it….end of! Hardships for all who deal with this disorder…what you mean families who have someone with Autism and having to deal with occasional meltdowns etc? I left the cure part highlighted because that struck out to me so much…they seem determined to prevent what they would call ‘normal families’ from having to put up with Autistic Children or something like that…you can’t help but get that feeling when you watch any of there videos
Ok, so far the home page looks sort of normal, nothing that makes me want to scream out hate against them but I see that they do have a YouTube Channel so I’ll go on there…watch a video…My Name Is David looks good…let’s see… ok so far he’s explaining how he might look the same as everyone else but he is very much different, how he can’t tell facial expressions and such, also he takes everything too seriously…hang on…he’s saying it was awkward for him to have his teeth cleaned…well that’s not for everybody with Autism!
That video was done by Robot Chicken apparently though but it wasn’t bad…he pretty much said what it’s like to have Autism and asking for understanding but what annoyed me slightly was that it made me feel that this video was for children only…although David did say that he would always have Autism so all in all, that particular video was good. Ok, I have read some comments on various blogs and pages and apparently, the charity doesn’t have a single person with Autism on the board which is a bit odd if you ask me and as well that this charity makes people with Autism out to be a nuisance to society but does that justify all these Anti Autism speak parades I’ve seen advertised and all that? Well I’ve heard of a video that they made some time ago called…I Am Autism so I’ll check that one out and…
Also, I managed to find this video which Autism Speaks was apparently behind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mycxSJ3-_Q
Few minutes later
Ok, so my face after that video was like this-
What the hell did I just see…did they really make this? I wasn’t on their YouTube page but I still found it elsewhere! What was this horrible video, I feel disgusted that someone thought this was a good idea…they make Autism sound like a disease worse than the Black Death! how is this allowed to exist? They won’t rest until Autism is cured? my head is in my hands right now, how are people with Autism supposed to interact properly in this world when a charity like this makes us all look like we can’t do the simplest of tasks without embarrassment…you’ll make sure my marriage will fail??? What?? Who wrote this filth? ”I work faster than pediatric AIDS, cancer, and diabetes combined…” Just shut up!
Ok now I get where people are coming from…I’m offended by that video and can see why people are against this Charity, never have I felt so bad about my Autism as how they make it out to be, they make Autism look like the biggest threat to humanity or something along those lines…I don’t need to watch any more videos when they were capable of making that horror fest! Autism is not a global crisis, its not even a crisis! As well as this, I found a small statement made by one of the founding members Suzanne Wright which was
“This disorder has taken our children away. It’s time to get them back.”
No…just no…when you have one of the leaders coming out with stuff like that…you know that this Charity is not to be trusted!
This group appears to be having more of a negative effect on people with Autism, rather than a positive one, I mean…look at the Featured Image in my blog…it has a puzzle piece in it…now why do Autism Speaks us a puzzle piece to promote their cause…they often say that people with Autism are a puzzle piece without all the pieces…one piece is missing apparently…so they think we aren’t fully human or something? I’m not so sure I feel all that comfortable with an Autism Charity making us sound like an unfinished puzzle or something…many people could take that the wrong way and look at people with Autism at completely the wrong way! Which is not what we need!
All I will say after this very small look at this charity is that I’m glad it’s not in my country, that all sounds like it would be too hectic to deal with on a daily basis, it’s in America, it started over there and well…I just hope it doesn’t spread
At least they aren’t in the U.K
