Sunderland vs Newcastle United, a derby that is always personal to the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland, they just don’t like each other! and it creates a fantastic football game, a heated game that can never be called boring by any football fan…well maybe Middlesbrough fans who want to be a part of it all! The question today is…who will get the bragging rights this time round in the North East? As a neutral, I can’t wait to watch this game and not have to worry about who wins and who loses…I never miss this game and have never been dissapointed by the drama, goals or passion from both set of fans!
Today, former Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce crosses the River Tyne and now manages the Black Cats Sunderland! Whereas the manager in charge of the Magpies is Steve McClaren! However, this game is a relegation dogfight where if Sunderland win, they go level with Newcastle on points and if the Magpies win, they pull away from Sunderland and move closer to Chelsea of all teams! Overall, both teams desperately need a win, not only for bragging rights but to move away from the bottom three, but as Sunderland are used to being down this end of the table, they will surely be confident on once again being the escape artists of the league, Newcastle however…this will be more serious for them as relegation is not common with this, even though they were actually relegated only a few years ago! Needless to say, out of the teams…a loss for Newcastle would be worse for them than Sunderland who I think if they lost would still be able to recover…apart from feeling annoyed with the taunts and chants from the Magpies fans after the game!
Sunderland however have a psychological advantage over Newcastle for two reasons today
- They are in their stadium, The Stadium of Light
- Newcastle haven’t won this derby for 4 years now!
History could repeat itself today as Sunderland have in the past appointed a new manager then shortly afterwards gone on to beat Newcastle, so I’m sure some Newcastle fans thought deja vu recently with the appointment of Sam Allardyce and that history won’t repeat itself with a Sunderland win…I can imagine the train ride home being quite uncomfortable otherwise!

Who will win? Well Newcastle have just come off a fantastic win over Norwich and could be full of momentum today so that could be used into finally ending this drought in the derby match, however Sunderland could continue the mind games of having won this derby for 4 years in a row! It’s anyone’s game but I think it will be…a Draw, both teams have good reasons to win so I think they will counter one another and goals will be scored but I will go for a 2-2 draw and annoyed fans galore as I doubt a draw will do any good for either team and you never want to draw with your biggest rival!
Let’s just hope that we don’t see anything like this again!
